Miscellaneous Pictures

We made corny shirts for the Grandpas for Father's Day. Here's Grandpa Moore's . . .
and here's Grandpa Payne's.
I ordered Caris a bunch of bows to match her very first t-ball uniform. Isn't this so cute?
Canaan was pretty impressed with the waffles & berries Malachi was eating! Only a month and a half until he can take his own first bites of solids!
Felicia and Canaan at the church picnic. Felicia was born in December '06.
At our church picnic there were two VERY HUGE slip & slides set up. The kids absolutely loved it!
Graham zooming down!
Caris on the slip & slide, having tons of fun!
Little Mister, quite curious and also very drooly.
Canaan enjoying his "new" exersaucer

Canaan, 20 weeks

-Had his 4-month checkup. Weighs 20 lbs 3 oz (over 95%) and is 28" long (over 95%). Really enjoyed kicking the crinkly paper on Dr. Kaye's examining table.

-Got another cold.

-Likes to "scritchy scratch" in his pack n play. He's learned what a neat noise his fingernails make against the nylon side of it and he practices it when he wakes up - and last night he practiced for a good 5-10 minutes in the middle of the night. LOL

Canaan, 19 weeks

It's really hitting me how much Canaan has changed. I can't BELIEVE four whole months have gone by. It's so much fun watching his personality really emerge now and seeing him learn to actually DO things, but boy I can't believe he's not a newborn any more.

We got him an exersaucer at a yard sale for $5 and he really likes it! I say, "bounce!" and he jumps, and he can turn himself around and play with all the toys.

We have been dragging poor baby all over the place now that baseball has started. Almost every night we are out and about and most of the time he is just so laid back about it all. He'll still sleep out in public if I nurse him.

Lots of times now he wakes up "talking" and looking around instead of crying. When he sees me coming for him he smiles so big!

When he is facing away from me and can't see me, I call his name and he smiles before he can even see me. Aww!

Canaan's Dedication

Today we dedicated Canaan in front of our church body. This is not when he makes his own personal decision to follow Jesus but it is a time when we promise to raise him to know the Lord, and a time when our church dedicates to help us any way they can in raising him up to be a godly man.
Worship team in the back, then in front, Alif, me, Pastor Kenny and baby Canaan. Pastor Kenny spoke kind words thanking Alif for all of the construction he has done on our new church home and me for letting him. Ha ha!
Praying over our precious son!
Praying *forcefully* over our precious son. LOL :*) Canaan was calm and peaceful and quiet as usual and Pastor Kenny asked if he's always this good. I answered, "yes."

Brick Pathway

Finished pathway from an odd angle. Sorry about that. LOL
Graham & Alif on the side of the house, loading up more bricks to take to Malachi.
Malachi in action. He did so great with this! At the very end, Alif kicked a brick into place without realizing that Malachi's finger was in between the two bricks. I heard Alif going, "::::::gasp:::::::: Ow, ow, ow, oh maaaaan oh maaaaan ow ow ow" and went out to see what had happened. Malachi never cried or anything but did come in and we put some aloe and ice on it. It's fine today. :-)

When we were getting ready to move into our new house, there was a lot of work to be done! One day there was a guy that Fred had paid to help Alif for the day, and Alif sorta ran out of work for him to do so he had the guy pull up a brick pathway in the back yard. Little did he know that that very pathway was my favorite thing ABOUT the back yard! I could not believe my eyes when I saw that it was gone. Well, last night Alif was clearing out the side of the house, where he plans to park his Corvette, and he figured that as long as they were going to move the brick they might as well put it all back as a path and patio. With Alif's guidance, Malachi laid the whole thing. Hooray, my cute path is back!!

Caris

Caris just now, after I talked to Graham about eating some of Caris' special snacks: (Hugs me) "I love you Mommy. I love you so much . . . 'cuz you handle every problem." ROFL!

Canaan, 18 weeks

-We had a cold snap (highs in the lower 80s LOL) and I got to put him in snuggly outfits for a couple days. So cute to see him all cozy like that!

-I was holding him in McDonald's one day and it occurred to me how *aware* he suddenly is! Looking all around, holding his head up all the time without breaks now. He was talking his head off to a huge Shrek cutout. LOL

It isn't enough.

I went for a late-night Target run just now, and on my way home I was listening to the Donut Man (Rob Evans) and a group of children singers praising the Lord. Ok, in all honesty, I was praising right along. As I sang the words, "Here we are with our voice we sing, with our hearts and hands up-raised . . . " it occurred to me: it isn't enough to just be an attentive mother. It's not enough to teach my children their academics, give them hugs, read to them, take them on walks, do crafts with them, expose them to new places. If I am to raise children who can stand against the wicked that is so prevalent in this world then I have to actively teach them to love the Lord, to honor Him, to lift their hands to them and praise Him. I thought of sitting in on the little children's worship session on Sunday evenings and hear Miss Marta lovingly, gently guiding the children into worship with Him. She doesn't only model this, she specifically teaches them: "raise your hands, children. This is how we tell the Lord how much we love him." And the children, so willing, do raise their hands to Him. If my kids have any chance to fight off the evil that surrounds them, they have to have a habit of calling on Him in every circumstance. They have to know His word and what it means. Oh Lord, guide me as a mother. Make me aware in every moment what I can be doing to help my children to gird up their hearts against the wicked one.

Lotsa Pics

I converted this picture of Canaan & I to "sketch" and thought it turned out so sweet. I love my baby!!

Canaan's first-ever stroller ride!! We walked all around our neighborhood for about an hour and he did just great! I still sling him pretty much everywhere, but it's getting too hot to sling him during our exercise-walks.

When you've got thighs this chunkylicious, you'd better show them off!

We are working on limiting the pillow/thumb action to nap and bedtime only. We're not doing that well with that.

So Caris is a little beyond the 13-month age "limit" on the Bumbo but she sure likes it anyway.

Canaan enjoying his new Bumbo seat

Alif, Graham and Canaan enjoying the park during Malachi's baseball practice.

Boys circle sparring

First Graham (orange belt) is sparring with another boy and then Malachi gets in on the action! Go boys! This was just for fun on awards night.

Oopsie Poopsie

Canaan went to bed a little after 8 last night (in a Rumpster AIO with a preemie prefold) and woke up at 6:30 this morning. I nursed him, then went to change him but he was totally dry. I took him to the shower and turned it on and held him so he could go pee. I waited like a minute but he didn't go, so I just took him back to the bed and put the diaper back on. I commented to dh that he hadn't pooped yesterday and that was weird because he usually poops 3 or 4 times. Came downstairs and nursed him again while dh took a shower upstairs, then felt the diaper and he had peed. Went upstairs to change him and dh goes, "Umm, he pooped in the shower." I don't know how I didn't hear/see it but he pooped all over the "dam" (that thing you step over to get into the shower). ROFL ROFL

NIP

I feel sorta strongly about NIP - nursing in public. When I had Malachi, I never nursed him in public. I went to a bathroom (in the stall, on the toilet) or my car or, if I was in someone else's home, to a bedroom. If I absolutely HAD to nurse him in front of others, I covered us with a blanket. I loosened up a bit with Graham, and a little more with Caris. Alif & I met with a financial planner when she was just a few weeks old and I was trying to get her to latch on in his office with a receiving blanket over her. We knew this guy, John, and it was just sort of uncomfortable to me, nursing her directly across from him. She was a little squirmy and fussy, and he said in a totally casual, kind way (not like he minded her fussing a bit) "Take the blanket off! She's hot in there! My wife just whips it out wherever we are. When they've gotta eat, they've gotta eat!" I tell you what, for whatever reason, that just freed me right up. LOL There are still times I cover during latch, just so no one gets a big eyeful of my bustiness, but for the most part, I just latch him on discreetly and go about life.

Now the actual point of this post. Today I was sitting at Graham's baseball practice and nursing Canaan. A Dad walked past - a tough-guy, guys'-guy kind of Dad - and said, "That is a beautiful bonding right there." How sweet, isn't that??

I hope that as time goes by, more women will nurse their babies - at home, in the restroom, anywhere they're comfortable - and that it will start to be seen as the norm. I hope some Mom sees me nursing somewhere, chatting with someone or tending to my bigger kids, and thinks, "hey, I could do that!"

I love you

I love you, Mom. This is a silly thing, maybe, but I have been thinking of this since the moment you said it and have never sat down to blog about it. I think I am afraid that how much this meant to me won't translate in a blog entry. When I was in labor with Canaan and you said you were on your way, I anticipated your arrival. It was a wonderful feeling when you came into the bathroom with a smile on your face, but also the look a mother has when her daughter is in labor. Excited, nervous, praying everything is going to go well. Anyway, at some point you said, "This is the cleanest bathroom I have ever seen!" Obviously it wasn't literally the cleanest bathroom you'd *ever* seen but it was wonderful to be laboring and have my Mom there and speaking words of affirmation. Thank you for that! Every time I clean that bathroom I smile and think of your kind words.

Dad, Alif got me a new iPod and as the kids & I drove home from Costco today, the Paul Simon song "Father and Daughter" came on. I had read the lyrics when you gave me that cd, but I'm not sure I'd actually listened to the song. I am a lucky girl (even though I'm a grown woman with my own kids) to have a Dad who really loves me and isn't afraid to say it. I love you too, Dad.

I'm gonna watch you shine
Gonna watch you grow
Gonna paint a sign
So you'll always know
As long as one and one is two
There could never be a father
Who loved his daughter more than I love you

Oh wow, what a surprise!

Alif went to run errands today - said he needed to go by our old house and look for some jeans. Well, when he came back he gave me a brand-new iPod!! I said, "Oh my gosh, what's this for??" He said, "You needed one! We have a little extra money since selling the truck, so I got you one." Wow, how thoughtful and generous of him!! :*)

Canaan, 16 weeks

-when reclined (in the car seat, bouncy, in the bath), lifts his head to look around
-grabby-bear! He's grabbing things really well all of a sudden
-when I pull him up from a laying-down position, he keeps his head level with his body

PetSmart

Alif took the big kids to Caris' tee-ball practice last night, and on the way home they stopped at PetSmart to look at the animals ("definitely cheap entertainment," Alif says!). This morning Caris came in and said her good mornings to Canaan and I, then she had a lot to say about their PetSmart trip:

Mommy, would you like to go to PetSmart today and meet all the friendly animals? There are parrots and fishes . . . and there are lizards that eat tiny crickets. The crickets are so teensy you can barely see them! There are cats too, and little fishes in boxes this big (about 4" x 6"). The animals are so awesome.

Lice - awwww!

The children's director at our church called just after we got home on Sunday. She sounded uneasy, and I thought, "Oh no, why is she calling with an unhappy tone on Mother's Day?" She said, "I needed to let you know that one of the little girls in Caris' class had lice." I said, "Ohhhh dear. We'll just pray that one passes right by!" After I got off the phone I told Alif what she had said, and Caris asked what lice are. I told her they are little bugs that live in people's hair and she said, "Awwwwwwwww!!!" as if that would be the cutest thing ever! Imagine, your very own personal bugs! ROFL That girl sure loves her bugs!

Canaan, 15 weeks

-Gave up lip-sucking in favor of sucking his fingers. A lot.
-Smiles hugely at everyone! He is such a friendly little guy!
-At house church this week Cyndi said, "Has he had a haircut?" I told her he hasn't and she said, "His hair's just growing in perfectly." It really is. It sticks straight up but it's all even all over. LOL
-Doesn't spit up much any more.
-Loves naked time in a really happy, leg-kicking kind of way.
-Got his polio shot, and didn't even cry!
-When I lay him on his tummy on his baby gym, he seems to enjoy the scritchy-scratchy sound his nails make on the fabric.
-I finally figured out how he magnetizes to me in the bed! Up to now, I'd always just known that if he's sleeping with me I will wake up with a little baby pressed neatly against my side, but that I won't know how he managed to scoot all that way. I witnessed him in action today! He will turn his head toward me and lean it forward. Ah, nice, baby face next to mine. Oh wait though. Then he turns his face away from mine and throws his head back. Pleah, baby hair in my face. So that's how he does it. He just uses his head as leverage, rolling it back and forth, back and forth, till he's as close as he can possibly get, which is when his entire body is in direct contact with mine.
-Likes to touch my shirt while he nurses

Boring Update

Maybe if I always title these particular blog entries about my day "boring update" then anyone who visits can skip it. LOL I am sure that it truly is boring to anyone but me, but I tend to use this blog as sort of a journal so alas, the boring entries.

Here's how our day basically went today:
Woke up around 7:30, laid around in bed chatting with Alif, Canaan smiley between us. Got up and made english muffin egg sandwiches for breakfast, tidied up here & there, and started laundry, which had become a HUGE mountain during the week despite what seems like constant laundering. Gave Caris & Canaan baths, cut Malachi & Graham's hair. They took baths too. Took a shower and got dressed while kids watched Saturday cartoons, played online etc. While kids had quiet time I pumped, talked to Mom and Megan online and loaded the dishwasher. Watched an episode of Digging for the Truth about Pompeii. Interesting and sad. Kids went across the street and threw baseballs with Fred while I nursed Canaan. Caris came home and was looking through a book of the month catalog. She saw a book cover with monsters on the front and said, "Not this one; Jesus doesn't like this." I told her she has such a discerning heart to know what Jesus likes! Boys came home and helped me with Canaan while I folded two baskets of laundry and put it away. Put Canaan to bed. Cleaned kitchen while I talked to Lynette on the phone, then realized I didn't have the ground beef I needed for dinner and called Alif to see if he could bring something home. I have not had a good WW day. It started out good but unraveled. God's mercies are new every morning! Kids are now watching the Jetsons and I am going to work on my desk/kitchen floor and load the dishwasher again.

Baby

Canaan actually fell asleep in his car seat today, miracle of miracles! I brought him inside and about three minutes after this picture he was wailing with tears streaming down his face. But do you see right above his right elbow? He got his first freckle a couple weeks ago!

Canaan has this major lip-sucking habit goin' on. If he can get to his hand, great - if not, a lip will do. First to stick that tongue out and try to find some lip to suck . . .

There it is - I think I'll suck this bottom lip for a minute but I will probably switch to the top one soon.

I call Canaan "spazzy" a lot because he has these little periods during the day where he's just a complete spaz. He's so excited he can't contain himself so he's all smiling and eyes really wide, and then his body gets super stiff, then he's kicking and flailing and omgosh it's HILARIOUS.

And then thank goodness, he goes back to his usual self. ROFL All that exercise wears a baby out! During a little cold snap last week I put him to bed with a blanket just up to his waist. I went to find him and somehow he'd snuggled in all the way and was sucking on the blanket. Always, always he moves from the middle of the pack & play to the very edge like this.

Whose face is the chubbiest? :-D He scratched his little face, poor baby. When I'm nursing him lying down I sometimes have to help him control his little arm, because he tries to rub his eyes but really it's more like clawing them out since he's so uncoordinated still.

Schools are for fish

Canaan, 14 weeks

Reaches for toys, slowly and carefully
Sucks his hand/fingers in any position now
Tries to sit up by lifting his head when he's in an inclined position
His hair is getting so long and sticks straight up! It's about 1/2" long now!
Everywhere we go, people think he's so cute and cozy in his sling, and he smiles at everyone! He's such a little charmer!
Still coughing. :-(
When I hold him in my lap he pat-pats and rubs my arm

Magic Healing Salts

The kids are watching probably the worst rendition ever of Prince Caspian, but they seem to enjoy it. Caris just came up to me and said, "When can we get some of those healing salts, and we can put it on all of my bleeding spots?" I asked her what healing salts, and she said, "Those kind they used on the movie." I told her they are probably pretend and just something in a movie and she was quite sure that they are real. I asked her where we might get some and she said, "We can probably get them at Walgreens but we'll have to go inside to get them, not in the drive-through." ROFL ROFL

Another day in our home

Here is a dreadfully boring account of our day. I'm recording it because even dreadfully boring accounts are very interesting to me years down the line!

6:45 am Woke up and nursed Canaan, then dozed while he did for a little while longer. Then I got up for coffee because I needed to take Alif on errands.

7:25 am Left to follow Alif to the garage to drop off his "little truck" (he got a new truck this week, a Ford F-250!) for some pre-sale repairs. Came back home and picked up Chamil's Mazda, followed Alif over to the detail shop to have that car detailed.

9:00 Finally home. Poor Canaan looked absolutely tortured. He does not enjoy his car seat. Doesn't he know how beautiful and cozy it is? (I accidentally typed dozy at first - it's not usually dozy at all for him, unfortunately). Nursed him and put him down for a little nap. Did some reading with the boys and read to Caris. She's really into a Spanish word board book right now. I feel silly pronouncing some of the words but she finds me quite an expert so pronounce i must. She asked if she could say the words today too. Of course you can! But she didn't after all. Lynette called to see if we wanted to go on a walk at 11. We did want to!

10:17 Canaan woke up. I know the exact time because as I lay nursing him I thought, oh dear, we definitely do not have time for the grocery store before our walk. I also did not want to shower before our walk because it was warm out and I thought then I'd be stinky the rest of the day.

11:00 Left the house for our walk. Enjoyed our walk! We walked for almost an hour. Slowly, but hey, slow walking is better than no walking.

12:00 Nursed Canaan and watched as he did lots of stretching after being asleep in the sling for over an hour. How precious is a stretching baby? Arms reaching high but still barely past the top of his head, legs all bunched up and then kicking out, lips pursed and head cocked to the side just a bit . . . ahhhhhhhh, that is one totally relaxed baby. Oh yeah, here comes the poop . . .

12:20 Went to McDonald's and got super-nutritious food for myself and my little children. :-P

1:20 Put everyone down for naps/quiet time. Wasted time completely while they napped. Clicked around online, tidied up a bit here & there, did a load of laundry and started the dishwasher, etc. LaMonica called to see if she could come by after 3 to bring me bottles and a new breast pump!

4:00 or so LaMonica came by, showed me how to use the super-nice pump, and had a nice visit. Canaan woke up just before she came and nursed, of course.

5:30 Alif got home and Malachi got ready for his first baseball practice of the season. This year he moves up to regular pitch. Wow! I took a shower while Graham entertained Canaan (who was in the swing right outside the bathroom LOL). Caris sat on my bed looking at books. Alif took Malachi to practice.

6:30 I finally left for Malachi's practice, and got there just in time to see the last 10 minutes or so. Still nice to see his team and meet his coach. Two very familiar boys are on his team this year. Their Mom's name is Monica and I really like her. She has 5 or 6 kids. That's not why I like her, but it's always fun for me to be around families with lots of kids. Lots being more than four.

7:30 Went to McDonald's and got more super-charged food for my family. This is such a disgusting habit. BUT! I have a two-week menu written up, and tomorrow morning I am going to the grocery store. I'm going to get everything I need for TWO weeks instead of one. We'll make a quick run after a week to get milk and fresh produce.

8:00 REALLY wanted my kids in bed. Canaan nursed & went down. Big kids ate noisily at the table while American Idol played in the background. McDonald's Happy Meal toys happen to be AI toys right now. Graham had a hand-clapper gun-looking AI device, AI sunglasses and AI headphones so that he could be totally American Idol while eating and watching. It was my idea to use the hand-clapper toy when he really liked a song, but when he did it I snapped, "Graham! Don't use that when Canaan's asleep please!" :-P

8:30 Kids all in bed. Yaaaaaaaay! Alif was at his parents' (they're still in Africa) installing some tile. Heard Caris crying in sort of a frantic, scared-sounding way and ran up the stairs. She smelled fire. How scary! I reassured her and prayed with her and she fell right asleep. I wish I could know that her fears would always be so easily soothed. I ate two small McFlurries while watching AI and reading about my new borrowed breast pump online. IMed with a couple friends. Chatted with Alif for a few when he got home.

9:22 Sat down for my third pumping session of the day. Told Alif he just had to see this new pump in action. He saw and said, "that is ridiculous." I truly look like a dairy cow while using this thing. It's completely hilarious. Boobs should never look like that. But the milk that comes out makes me very, very happy. This is one of the best gifts I've ever been able to give.

10:00 Sat down here. Went into cyber-space time warp and it's suddenly 10:45. I'm *exhausted*!!

Lynette and I are starting Weight Watchers on Friday!! We're only going to go to one meeting and then we will meet weekly on our own. I know that sounds doomed to failure but I hope it goes well.

Graham found a worm on our walk today and loved it. He said he was going to take it home so that it can make our dirt into good soil. Then the worm formed itself into a perfect heart in Graham's palm. I said, "It loves you!" :-D

Canaan, 13 weeks

-He was rubbing his hair rhythmically this morning . . . flat palm against the back of his head, slowly forward, then fling off the front in a big wide circle around to the back again. Alif goes, "You're gonna wear your hair out!" :-D
- Loves being in his sling! If he's sleepy *at all* he is asleep within minutes, even seconds sometimes. If he's not sleepy he'll just settle in cozily and ride along, sucking his fist or fingers and looking around.
-Talks to the nursie while he nurses. LOL
-I sang this cute kids' song, "Shout! Shout joyfully, all the earth . . . " and the beginning is kind of high and stacatto, and he laughed. A lot. :-D
-I look down sometimes when I have him in my lap, and there he is, smiling up at me! OMGosh this baby is so SWEET! He smiles so much!

Lunch Conversations, Etc.

I was sitting on the couch nursing Canaan after errands today and the kids were eating lunch at the table and I overheard:
Caris: What's a Barbarian?
Graham: A Barbarian is a very uncontrolled person.

A couple days ago Megan told me she is going to paint a bench in her garden periwinkle. I thought that sounded so cute, and also thought of the long bench we have in our back yard that desperately needs painting! Today we went out and got periwinkle paint! :-) As we approached the checkstand, an employee was standing at the entrance of the self-check area. He was singing opera-style. As we got closer he changed to a peppier singing style and sang out to us, "the self-check stand is reaaadyyyy, the self-check stand is ready!" Isn't it great to have fun with even the most mundane chores? I mean really, not only is HIS life more fun but he made ours more fun today too. What better way to delight a bunch of children and their Mommy than to sing to them as they shop? He he!

Alif bought Caris a couple of dresses last weekend and they were too short so we went and exchanged them today. I made her try them on before her nap and sat admiring her beautiful self while she posed for silly pictures. Oh, that girl, how I love her! :*)

Canaan was really sick with bronchitis but he is improving daily. He's still got a gunky cough but he's happier and sleeping better and crying much less. It was awful seeing my usually so-happy boy so decidedly UNhappy!

Canaan, 12 weeks

-got Bronchitis and was quite miserable. One night he was crying for about 45 minutes and the next morning Graham told me he had a dream that Canaan was crying and crying and crying. LOL
-One morning he woke up and cooed in a complaining voice instead of crying. Yay!
-Smiles & laughs when I sing to him. Aww!
-Falls asleep sucking on his fingers or fist
-Started using Denorex for cradle cap. It's helping some but not as much as I hoped.

Nature

As we were getting out of the car yesterday, I looked down and saw this on our driveway. ROFL! It looks just like a mouse but it's really just a piece of wood and a pine needle.

Graham came running in this morning to tell me of this interesting find. To give you a size comparison, the egg is resting on regular-sized bricks.

Grammy-Mammy

Graham cracks me up. He has such a fun vocabulary for a 7-year-old! He was setting up a Polly Pockets "store" the other day and I asked him how he would get people to choose his store. He said he would just tell people he had the best products. Then I told him that I'm having a hard time selling Canaan's small diapers and asked how he thought I could get people to buy them. He said, "Tell them they're good diapers." I said that I had already done that and he said, "Tell them you're selling them at reasonable prices." LOL

And in other Graham news, he has a loose top front tooth! :*)

Canaan, 11 weeks

-starting to be frightened by sudden loud noises. Like, I sneezed and he cried
-makes his voice go up and down and so expressive when he "talks" to me
-had his two-month well-baby visit. Up to 16 lbs 5.5 ounces (97+%) and 25.5" (97+%)
-had his first two shots: HiB and DTaP. He was a little fussy/restless for about a day after and woke in the night once a night for the next three nights, around 3-4 am. Boy that makes Mommy tired when she's not used to it! Yawn!
-like his cousin Christian, Canaan loves changing time! He smiles & coos and loves the one-on-one attention. I remember Malachi screaming during every change for the first couple months! LOL
-learned to blow bubbles
-got his birth certificate! I love how under place of birth it says "Home". :*)

Canaan, 10 weeks

-We went to a party one night and he was calm the whole time, but then he cried for 5-10 minutes inconsolably when we got home. I guess he was totally overstimulated!
-Sleeping through every night, usually about 11 hours
-Had one catnap day followed by two very sleepy days
-Slept almost all the way through church in Auntie Lynnie and then Mommy's lap. I was nursing and then there was applause that woke him up and scared him. Poor baby!

I'm so lucky

I was lying on my bed this evening nursing Canaan before putting him to bed and I noticed that his little sleeve was covering about half of his hand. I fixed the sleeve up for him and suddenly felt awash with thankfulness. How lucky am I that it's ME who gets the privilege of taking care of this precious baby's needs for him? Man! Then I started thinking about how blessed I am that I'M the one who gets to spend all day with him and see and know every detail of who he is. The way his little fingers curl into fists, and then how his fingers look like little sausages when he stretches them out. The way his eyelashes curl up and just slightly outward, and how the very outer ones stick to his skin sometimes, and how they're so fine and soft that if he cries and I wipe his tears, the little hairs stick to his lower eyelid until he opens up his eyes. Even the pattern of his forehead hairs and the way his tummy rises and falls with each breath, and how his legs are very, very still as he falls asleep while he nurses. Oh! I love this baby! I tear up just thinking about the wonder of it all - and then I think of the God who created him, and I wonder how can anyone love a baby this much and yet not adore the God who gave such a wondrous gift? I literally cannot resist kissing that smooth, soft forehead, stroking that sticky-uppy hedgehog hair, and I think of how much I want to hug the God who made him. Then I looked down at my love and his eyes were fluttering closed, and do you know that I actually teared up because I knew this was it, that he was out for the night and I wouldn't see him until tomorrow? I am getting cornier and cornier with every baby I have!!

Canaan, 9 weeks

Two months old already! Oh my goodness! Canaan is so adorable!! Here's what he's doing this week:
-Slept through the night every night but one! Long nights, too - usually about 7 pm to 6 am!
-Laughed!! Definitely one of my favorite milestones! We were laying on my bed face to face and he cooed and then giggled in his low baby voice. I laughed so hard and got tears in my eyes, it was so precious! I even called Alif to share. :-)
-Had his first Easter!

Malachi is Nine

My precious baby boy is nine. Nine. How have nine years passed by already? I completely sound like every other mother, and now I know why . . . God knits our hearts to our children in such an amazing way, but it doesn't only bond us to our children, it bonds us with other mothers. And it's a good thing, too, because when our little birds fly away we will need one another to cling to as we watch the babies soar. There's one line of one song that so describes how I feel . . . "I'll have tears as you take off, but I'll cheer as you fly". The entire song is my absolute heart's cry as a mother (Find your Wings by Mark Harris).

Some days feel so long, but as I reflect today on nine years of my son's life, it's just so fast. It's just not that much time that I really get to devote myself to growing this child into a young man who will love the Lord above anything and anyone else. It's just . . . so . . . fast.

I think of my Mom - every year she says, "this time nine years ago . . . " or "this time seventeen years ago . . . " or now, "this time thirty-two years ago . . . " I look forward to hearing the story every year. I love knowing that the day I was born was special to my Mom, so special that it's forever imprinted on her heart. Of course it is! So, I do the same thing. I tell each of my kids their birth story each year. And just in case Malachi ever forgets, here's his:

I was due March 23, but that date passed right by and still no baby. I took off work right before my due date, assuming the baby would come any time. He didn't! I puttered around the house cleaning, straightening things, looking at the baby items we'd carefully collected, reading child care books. I washed the clothes and hung them neatly in the closet, stacked up all the changing pads and arranged the diapers just so. I washed the bassinet (pack n play) sheet and set it up where I wanted it. One day CC came in and jumped into the pack n play and I screamed so loudly at her, she never went near it again. LOL When a week had gone by and no baby, I washed the sheet again so it would be nice and fresh for Baby. I think I did that at least 2 or 3 times.

I saw the doctor when I was 40 weeks and she said it was time to schedule my induction! I hated the idea so much, but it's what she said to do, so I did it. She told me to call on the evening of March 31st and see if the Birth Center had room for me. I thought, I'm not calling them and having my baby on April 1st! When I called, they said I could come if I wanted to. I didn't want to, and so I didn't. I called on April 1 and they had plenty of room for me. We went out to dinner at an Italian restaurant in town and I was so nervous I hardly ate. I saw an old co-worker/friend and she was so excited for me!

We arrived at the Birth Center and checked in, but they didn't have a room ready yet so we sat in the waiting area for a long time. I was so nervous that every minute felt so awful. I felt a *little* bit better when we got a room. I did not really like the doctor who came in. It was late at night, after 10, and he didn't explain much at all. He just said he was going to put some gel on my cervix that would help it to get ready, and he said nothing would happen until morning. He said they would come in the next morning and put a second dose, and that if nothing happened still then they would start Pitocin later on. All of that basically sounded pretty awful to me.

We tried to get some rest, and I'm sure Alif did but I certainly did not. I was having some contractions, but nothing serious or painful. After a few hours, though, they did start to get rather uncomfortable. I called the nurse in and she gave me a sleeping pill and told me to get some rest. I took the sleeping pill but definitely did not sleep. The contractions got stronger and stronger, and I started to really get concerned. The breathing methods we had learned in Lamaze did nothing but get me riled up. I couldn't relax and I was scared. As the hours went by, I wondered how much worse it would get and how I would handle it. I asked for an epidural and the nurse said I wasn't dilated far enough for one. I asked her to check me so often she got irritated and would say, "It is not time yet. It's only been half an hour, and you need to stop asking me to check you so often." Ugh, I was so frustrated and upset!

Early morning I really thought there was no way I could make it through this. The nurse was telling me it would be at LEAST late afternoon, and I thought, no way. I cannot do this. Then my water broke! Alif said, "are you sure?" and it struck me so funny - I mean, there was a pop and water gushing out - I was SURE. Of course there was no laughing at this point - labor got REALLY SERIOUS after my water broke. This was at about 7:15 am. I called the nurse in and she checked me and said I'd dilated just about to a 3, so we could get an epidural now. YAY! I was so happy! Only thing though, the anesthesiologist was busy and he didn't get into the room until about 7:45. He got me all ready and by about 8:00 the epidural was in. I was still at a 3 when he started. A few minutes later I said that I had a lot of pressure, a LOT of pressure. The nurse dismissively said, "Ok hon, try and relax." The anesthesiologist was at the foot of the bed writing on something and he looked up and said, "Baby's crowning." Woah! Mad rush was ON! Nurses bustling, doctor called, bassinet wheeled in. At 8:10 am, after just a couple of pushes (if you could even call it that - I couldn't control it at all) my baby was born! I remember feeling like it was THE BIGGEST relief of my LIFE. One minute everything hurt and the next nothing did. My baby was out and lying across my abdomen. A nurse's voice said, "Well, what is it?" and someone else said, "It's a boy!" I wasn't surprised at all, which surprised me. It felt totally natural that I had a son. We had already chosen the name Malachi Michael for a boy.

He was absolutely perfect. I mean it. Every feature was beautiful. His skin was gorgeous. He had barely any hair and his little rosebud lips - oh, who could keep from kissing them? He had no eyebrows, not even a place where eyebrows should be, but he had beautiful blue eyes and long eyelashes. He had the tiniest little fingernails, and long, thin fingers that curled around mine like they were created just for me. He was seven pounds exactly, and twenty inches. He was perfect, perfect.

So now here we are - my beautiful baby boy has grown into a gorgeous big boy. He's such an amazing little person! Malachi is helpful and thoughtful and talented and smart. And he's halfway to when I'm supposed to be ready to let him go. I won't be ready. I just can't fathom that I could ever be ready for him to leave my cozy, safe, loving nest where he fits just right. I love him!

I have mostly been doing just fine with this Birthday, until we were having his little party yesterday, and Mom & I had brought out the cake and the ice cream, and we were about to light the candle. I met Lynette's eyes and she said, and she really meant it, "Nine! Can you believe he's nine?" I turned to the cake and tears welled in my eyes. No! I want to say, I can't! He can't already be nine years old! Please, somebody tell me that the next nine years won't go as quickly as the first nine did! Tell me that something will change in me, in our relationship, in him . . . and that I'll be ready for him to go. It hurts so much to even think of it now that I don't even want to think of what it will be like when it actually happens! My prayer today, as April 2, 2007 is coming to an end, is that I can carry this feeling every day. That each day I wake up and remember how short the time is, even when Mr. Wonderful Malachi has a pouty attitude about something I've said no to. That my devotion to shaping his character is stronger than my irritation with the mess he leaves on the bedroom floor. That my OWN character develops so that I am a really good example to him.

I really, really love you, Malachi.

SLEEPY

Last night Canaan wore a navy blue outfit to bed that says "SLEEPY" across the front of the shirt. Graham said, "That's so funny, because if they put a baby in a crib below that, then it would be like he was making a dream about being sleepy."

Making a dream - what a concept!

Canaan, 8 weeks

-when on his tummy, lifts his head and looks all around
-I've seen him staring at his hand a couple times
-sucks on his hand when lying on his tummy
-out of 0-3 mos clothing and wearing 3-6 and even some 6-12
-holds head steady when upright, though will still sometimes drop it down
-so, so smiley and talkative! His sound repertoire is really growing!
-turns his head when he hears a voice he knows
-getting more of a schedule for naps - one or two short ones right after waking up, a long afternoon one and a short late afternoon/early evening one. Of course he often still falls asleep in the sling, car etc.

Canaan, 7 weeks

It makes me so sad to write "7 weeks". My baby is not really a newborn any more. It's bittersweet, of course - I love watching him grow and learn new things and become more aware, but oh, how I already miss his teensy-tiny newborn self.

-can bring his hand to his mouth and suck on the side of it, but can only control it for a couple seconds before it flings away
-spits up much less often, but still likes to burp after nursing
-infant acne is mostly cleared up
-I can already see new fuzzy brown/black hair growing in!

New Canaan pictures

I can't believe how big Canaan looks in his bouncy already, at only 5 weeks old! He will sometimes fall asleep in there while I take my shower.

Here's what we do most of the day. ;-)

Sportin' his cute new size small Thirsties cover in celery. Cute stuff!

And speaking of CUTE, Canaan's been SO SMILEY the last 2 days!!

3/4 kids

Caris: "Is that the baby's face?" LOL I just love these kissable little lips!!

Sweet Caris - actually, she was irritated with me but I thought this picture came out really cute anyway. LOL

You can't tell by the look on his face, but Malachi really does LOVE to hold his baby brother! He asks to hold him several times a day. Canaan obviously loves it too. LOL

Canaan, 5 weeks

-smiling and cooing, but not a lot yet
-had his first hair trim, just a few stray long hairs left after most of his hair fell out on the top
-speaking of hair, he plays with the hair on the crown of his head while nursing
-seems to be getting a little more particular about where he sleeps, which means he's a bit fussy when we're out and about and he gets tired
-still fits size small diapers, but a few mediums are starting to fit too
-most heard comments: he's so cute! he's so tiny! (!!) look at his tiny little feet!
-usually goes 3 hours between feedings at night, but has gone longer a couple of times
-long, long eyelashes flutter softly as he falls asleep
-he is getting so round and cherubic!
-I carry him tummy-to-tummy in the sling, and he always tucks one or both legs up IN it. It cracks me up!

Canaan today

Canaan may have to enroll in CFA (Ceiling Fans Anonymous). He really cannot get enough of gazing at it.

I admired this hilarious "monkey" outfit on my friend Dawn's baby and she mailed it to me!! Today it was 77º out and the perfect day for him to wear it.

God's Upside-Down Universe

It's true that God's ways are not like ours. I had many days toward the end of my pregnancy that I really worried how well I would be able to tolerate four children. I was so tired and cranky and many times my patience was absolutely worn thin. I kept thinking of how much *more* tired I'd be with a baby in the mix and how much *less* patient this would make me.

God has a funny, special way of doing things, though. My heart hasn't just expanded to include little Canaan, it's expanded to not just tolerate my older kids better but to truly enjoy them more. Sure, I have moments where my patience fizzles and I really just need some quiet - and God provides it. But all in all, having one more baby has just made me love being a Mom even more! Thank you Lord!

Pics of Canaan

Alif pointed out how funny it was when Canaan was sleeping with his hand flat against his face one night while we watched TV. LOL

Canaan, 4 weeks

-when we are nursing in bed, his hand finds its way inside mine - I love how it feels opening and closing in there
-he makes little sighing, high-pitched singing noises as he exhales during nursing
-his hair is falling out, resulting in a nice male-pattern baldness look. LOL
-0-3 outfits still fit, but are starting to look a bit snug. 3-6 outfits are still really big, though.
-he's starting to make much more intentional eye contact, though the visual love of his life is still the ceiling fan in the living room
-went on his first out-of-womb walk around the neighborhood. Really liked it - stared with face upward, soaking in the sun, then fell asleep in the sling
-has 12 white milia spots left on his nose. I actually counted them during an early-morning feeding. ROFL
-first time at church today! So fun showing him off to those who hadn't seen him yet! Alif & I worked in the nursery today so it was the perfect Sunday to head back to church.
-Alif said tonight, "He's really getting big." I responded, "I know. He doesn't look like a newborn any more." :*)
